"I see the way light moves through the trees, birds come with the seasons, how mist rolls across the paddocks. Small shifts in atmosphere or the seasons, change everything."

Karen Seaman has been part of Open Studios since the very first event ~ and this year she marks 13 years with something new. For the first time, she`s showcasing her work at Happ`s Pottery in Anniebrook near Dunsborough, joining Myles Happ in a space with its own rich creative history.

Karen works across oil painting, sculpture and ceramics ~ each medium a different way of catching the same fleeting moments. In recent years, clay has come back into her practice with fresh energy, and Happ`s feels like the perfect place to show why.

Karina Buckingham captures the beneficial, almost magical, effects of being immersed in nature; her paintings celebrate its energy and stillness.

Her Boranup Forest work is layered, luminous and full of movement. Stand close and the surface reveals itself slowly ~ tiny marks and complex details.

This is Karina`s fourth year taking part in Open Studios. She works from a purpose-built space next to her family`s vines in Yallingup ~ and the setting is as considered as the paintings inside it.

The joy of opening the kiln and bringing out beautifully glazed artworks!

Please welcome Chester Nealie and Matt Almera, both new to Open Studios this year. Chester, a potter of 60 years, is currently mentoring Matt Almera through the ‘Foster a Potter’ program.

Fascinated by wood kilns and Japanese anagama (tunnel) wood kilns, Chester fires his kiln over several days and nights, which requires a team of firers taking shifts.
“We build temperature until the kiln holds at 1300oC for some 50 hours to fully flux the ash and glazes, then seal the chambers and leave it to cool for around three days,” says Chester. “There is always an anxious excitement to unloading the pots and surveying the results.”

Congratulations Delfina Monteverde who won the 2025 Margaret River Art Prize for her self portrait `Shine Bright`.

The $5,000 award was judged by acclaimed Australian artist and installation technician for the Janet Holmes à Court Collection, Peter Usher, alongside REDSEA Gallery owner, Charlie Churcher.

The judges applauded its emotional depth and bold technique, noting: “This is an engaging work that showcases bold techniques, blending traditional portraiture with raw, expressive mark-making.”

And great news - Delfina is taking part in Open Studios again! Meet her and see her at work painting in her bushland studio, just off Caves Road in Burnside. Delfina will present a new collection of work plus `Tile Art` - a huge canvas from which you can select a small section to buy and take home.
